Information about Complementary and Alternative Medicine

When we speak of complementary and alternative medicine we are speaking of techniques that are used to diagnose or treat physical conditions apart from the scope of mainstream medicine. Alternative medicine is something that is used instead of using mainstream medicine while complementary medicine is used together with modern mainstream medicine. Many people still use the traditional mainstream method to diagnose their problems but when it comes to treatments some turn to alternatives for total body health enhancing measures.

Terminally ill patients look for complementary and alternative medicines for this sickness. Animals have also been beneficiaries of complementary and alternative medicine. Some people who have used alternative medicine have had their lives extended in unexplained ways and there are other health benefits you can gain if you use it. Because of this, the modern health systems are not seriously starting to examine these alternative systems. Alternative medicine is fairly a broad term which covers many different methods of treatment such as acupuncture, homeopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, Ayuvedric, and more.

Some other treatments or activities that are considered alternative medicine are biofeedback, massage, and exercise. They also include different systems of healing or treating disease such as chiropractic, homeopathy, and faith healing. Alternative medicine is a comprehensive approach which brings physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual harmony using natural methods. It also believes that the body has a network of channels that carry a subtle form of life energy. Patients are part of the healing method through prevention and treatment in alternative medicine.

As an add on to treatments such as drugs and surgery, complementary medicine is sometimes used. What complementary therapies are used for are the improvement of wellness, prevention of diseases and treatment of health problems. The most popular and prevalent use is for pain control. Complementary medicine includes a large number of practices and systems of health care like acupuncture, homeopathy, aromatherapy, osteopathy, reflexology, and chiropractic. Most of these, however, have not been fully accepted by modern mainstream medicine. Some other therapies included in complementary medicine are macrobiotics, vegetarianism, and orthomolecular medicine.

While there is an increasing popularity today with complementary and alternative medicine, the tendency of most clinic research by the health care industry merely focuses on single therapy successes within these systems. What is unfortunate about these clinical researches is that they focus on single therapies whereas complementary and alternative medicine is actually based on the belief that the whole person should be treated simultaneously which includes the body, mind, and spirits and therefore it includes the use of many therapies at the same time.

The success of complementary and alternative medicine in treating certain pains and sicknesses has made it popular to many people in this day.
